True Mirror - The Rediscovery

True Mirror Image

“What is a True Mirror?” This is exactly what we wondered when we first discovered this term during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown while researching online “Why do we look different on Zoom Calls?”

Before we get into the crux of it, its important to understand its peripherals and how and why True Mirror suddenly became the talk of the town during the COVID Pandemic.

The bustling world had come to a screeching halt with all the 195 countries announcing lockdowns one after the other, as the COVID-19 cases surged rapidly at an inexplicable lightening speed (or should we instead say – it seemed faster than light?).

The virus was ruthless and without remorse, was leaving millions of us sick and hospitalized, with the total death toll mounting higher than any of the other pandemics across the history of mankind.

Covid-19 - Empty Streets of New York

Well, that’s New York during the lockdown! One of the busiest cities in America was barren and deserted.

Such was the terror that the world was enslaved with and while the Governments across the globe were battling this vicious virus, people were worried about their loved ones and were looking for ways to connect with one another.

I am sure people reading this can relate to how it felt, especially the Gen-Z that had to spend all their time home, with parents 🙂 and their cellphones. This was the first time they had ever experienced a havoc of this magnitude, even for people who were in their 70s and 80s.

All in all, it was a nightmare for all of “Humankind“, with “Kind” being the only expression that came out collectively from all masses and by far, the most important value that was derived from those torrid 2 years of misery!

Even during this manic phase, where we also witnessed Governments blaming one another, there was(is) this company, Zoom, who worked silently bridging the gap between countries, family and friends and the entire world still considers Zoom a “Savior” and an “Angel”!

No, I am not exaggerating! Why you may ask, right?

Zoom provided the world with 30 minutes (at a stretch) of free access to video calls that the entire world could use to stay in touch with their contacts during these trying times.

Now, that, right there, changed the whole game because people were not siloed anymore and were connected via Video, which was a huge leap in itself as operating at those high bandwidths and yet handling their operations smoothly even at that large a global scale, was truly commendable and we admire their resolve and determination!

With this great technological support of Zoom, organizations started using Zoom widely to conduct virtual meetings online, by sharing screens and jointly resolving any organization-wide issues.

That’s when people started noticing that they look different on other person’s screen when the other person shared their screen and the attendees were visible on the screen.

So, this is when the world realized that the regular mirror that they had been using ever since they were born was not how they actually look in their real lives.

So, partially, we can blame or applaud Zoom to have helped us discover this ever-lasting phenomenon, that recently became popular, especially among the working population and Gen-Z.

What is a True Mirror - Explained

True Mirror Image

Now, let’s get to the million-dollar question, shall we?

A true mirror (also known as Non Reversing Mirror) is a mirror that does not reverse the left and right sides of an image, as a normal mirror would. When you look at yourself in a True Mirror, your left hand will be the left hand of the person inside of the mirror and similarly, the right hand will be the right hand of the person inside of the mirror.

This is why, a True Mirror is the most accurate mirror there ever was, is and will be because it shows us how others see us in the real world, without any reversal whatsoever (non reversal effect).

The way this is accomplished is by using two mirrors that are affixed at a 90-degree angle to each other. The first mirror reflects the image, and the second mirror reflects the reflected image back, reversing/undoing the initial reversal. The result is an image that is not flipped left to right, and appears as it would to someone else looking at you.

To understand this further, let’s look at this Diagram/Illustration below:

How Does A True Mirror Work?

True Mirror Diagram for explanation - mytruemirror.com

Let us start by introducing you to the characters of this “Mysterious Mirror” thriller so as to grip you tighter:

First, we have the Protagonist – The “Observer” in this Diagram which, BTW is the one on the other end of this device reading this Article 🙂 That’s right, the Observer is the magnificent YOU!

Then we have the “First Mirror” that represents one of the two mirrors of this conjoined twin-mirror saga.

The “Second Mirror” is the other mirror that intersects the First Mirror at a 90 Degree Angle and gets affixed.

Now that we’ve met these strange characters, let’s delve into the process of the unification of lights and a phenomenal intertwining of reflections:

First, the light that bounces off of you, goes to the “First Mirror”.

The “First Mirror” receives the light, reflects it as any normal mirror would, and bounces it off onto the “Second Mirror” because of its precise and meticulous 90-Degree angled placement and finally…

The second mirror embraces the glorious mirrored reflection, reflects it again and makes it non-reversed before shooting it back to you, the “Observer” in this illustration above.

This genius process involves mastering the angular designs which is why it works like a charm. You can check this article that dives deep into how the True Mirror reflection works.

With me so far? Hopefully, you nodded (even if you just yawned, that’s fine!)

Birth of the True Mirror

While the concept of True Mirror/Non Reversing Mirror dates back to the 19th Century, True Mirror was officially/commercially introduced by John Walter, an Artist and Inventor, in the 1990s.

He was inspired to create the mirror after noticing how different he looked in photographs compared to how he looked in the mirror. After putting in some work and research, he realized that this was because of the reversal in photographs and set out to create a mirror that showed people their true reflection.

John Walter founded the True Mirror Company in 1992 to create a mirror that reflected a person’s true image.

The Non-Reversing Mirror concept was originally patented by John Joseph Hooker in 1887. But, wait, there’s more history to it than this, so do check this article that goes way deep into the History of True Mirrors and how Sir Drew Brewster was originally the one who conceptualized this idea of Non-Reversing Mirrors. Let’s come back to the Walters now!

John Walter mastered the art of making True Mirrors by using two front surface mirrors and removing the seam between them, and finally creating an optically perfect, seamless true image mirror that provides a true reflection.

Inception of MyTrueMirror.com

Initially, before finding out about this concept of Non Reversing Mirrors, we too were completely perplexed about the technicalities involved so as to understand how the Non-Reversing Mirror actually works and finally, we were able to create the closest ever, crystal clear, online free True Mirror app for our user community to benefit from.

Don’t forget to come back here after seeing yourself as others do in the non reversing mirror.

Now that you are back, just continue reading on and we assure you, the concept of Non Reversing Mirror / True Mirror will be etched onto your mind.

Now, as stated before, while the concept of True Mirror sounds strange, this is exactly how others see you in real life. Sounds unfathomable?

Yeah… of course it does, because we are so used to our regular mirrors that reflect our image by flipping it horizontally, whereas True Mirrors don’t.

This is precisely the reason, why True Mirrors are used in some of the most expensive hair salons and makeup studios, where it is important to see a true and accurate reflection of oneself for styling and application purposes.

FAQs

While we’ve covered everything about True Mirror in our entire website, you can find some of the most frequently asked questions below:

Are True Mirrors Accurate?

Yes, True Mirrors are 100% accurate and to explain this in a layman’s terms, let’s ask ourselves a very basic and a simple question – “How do you read the letters printed on others clothes when they are in front of you? Naturally, you’ll say, “I very well can read the text because those are not inverted”, correct? Now, walk up to a mirror with some text printed on your shirt and try reading it. It’s obviously inverted, right?

So, this brings us to the conclusion that when we read the text printed on someone else’s clothes, it appears non-revered and therefore, when others see you, they too should be able to read the text non-revered, right?

So, to answer your original question, “Are True Mirrors Accurate”, let’s now look at ourselves in a True Mirror and bang! the mirror will not invert the text on your shirt, but instead, you’ll see it non-reversed.

Don’t believe us? Try this True Mirror for a quick glance and let us know if you actually were able to read the text as is, without any inversion.

So, this proves the point that True Mirrors are authentic and accurate.

The core reason why True Mirrors aren’t used as much as they should be, is because of the following 2 reasons:

  1. The complexity involved in making True Mirrors keeps the manufacturers at bay.
  2. Secondly, as compared to a normal mirror, the cost of buying a True Mirror keeps people at bay from buying one. Or perhaps, investing in one 🙂

These were the 2 most prominent reasons that we identified after surveying around 200 people in New York in October 2023.

What is the Difference Between a True Mirror and a Regular Mirror

While we have an in-depth article that covers this topic to its core, we’ve outlined the summary for your easy reference below. Please toggle the menu items to learn more about each of the difference in detail.

Regular mirrors, the ones we use in our daily lives, play a fundamental role in reflecting light. When light strikes a regular mirror, it obeys the laws of reflection, bouncing off the mirror’s surface. The angle of incidence (the angle at which light hits the mirror) is equal to the angle of reflection (the angle at which it reflects). The reflective rays that bounce off the mirror change their direction, causing the mirrored image that appears reversed. It is also vital to note that this reversal is only horizontal, meaning left and right are interchanged, while up and down stay the same.

True Mirror on the other hand reflects the image of the observer as is, without any reversed effect. That’s because of its genius crafting where two mirrors are affixed at a 90-degree angle. So, the light from the first mirror bounces off to the second mirror. Because it was already a reversed image that was passed on by the first mirror, the second mirror reverses the reflection again, thereby giving us a non reversing effect. It is indeed incredible, isn’t it?

As we all know, Regular Mirrors (Online Mirrors) are used for basic grooming, decor, science labs and telescopes.

True Mirrors (Non Reversing Mirrors) are extremely useful for makeup and other applications where an accurate representation of the reflection is necessary, such as theatrical performances, shows, etc. Best of all, who wouldn’t want to see themselves as others see them, correct?

Regular Mirrors, as we all know are pretty inexpensive and purse mirrors can often be bought in under $8 with discounts online.

True Mirrors often cost slightly more because of the complexity involved in its manufacturing process. On Amazon, the cost ranges from $16 – $70, depending on the brand, size, and the materials being used to make them.

Depending on the various sizes, the prices can widely fluctuate, starting from ~$175 and can go upwards of $3,000 for a full length mirror. But, it is worth the cost as we get to see the “Real Us” which in itself is a huge blessing, unless you want to use MyTrueMirror.com for your True Mirror needs 🙂

Reversing Mirrors (Regular Mirrors) are widely available in various sizes and shapes and at varying price points.

Non-Reversing Mirror (True Mirror) can be found online at MyTrueMirror.com, however, if you are looking to get a physical one, we’ve put in the work and have tested a few true mirrors of which 2 non-reversing mirrors stood out and you can read the Pros & Cons here. Also, there are very few custom manufacturers available that predominantly work in this space and could be considered, but because we only had one custom true mirror for testing purposes, we would not want to comment on that.

Regular and Online Mirrors are convenient for quick use and our free online mirror allows for easy access to an online mirror from anywhere with an internet connection.

True Mirror is always our recommended option because it provides an accurate reflection that would make you dress up per your true reflection and how others would see you. Nothing to complain really. They have mirrors that can surely come handy right when you need it the most. So, its always been around for me as I have had issues with low self esteem, so I rely a lot on mirrors, especially before meeting with someone or even traveling.
